PHP Application Developer, Internet Content Management Systems

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is seeking a developer who has experience in designing, planning and implementing software projects for high traffic Internet sites and mobile platforms from end-to-end. This is a role with a fantastic growth path. The developer will work directly with web designers, front-end developers, project managers, system administrators, DBAs and business owners to implement high-performance dynamic and interactive web-based applications in a fast-paced, mission critical environment. Focus will be on server-side technical design and implementation of complex, strategic initiatives.

The primary focus of this position is to create, develop, improve and maintain all of the various platforms and applications that feed and support our consumer facing web site, mobile and other application platforms. The ideal candidate should be highly motivated to build robust back-end systems.

We seek someone who is not content merely to make something work, but who instinctively wants to participate in the problem solving process with a view to the implications of how problems are solved. An enthusiasm for task ownership, order and attention to detail and an instinctive desire to systematize and organize will make this position a joyful and rewarding one.

------

Only candidates with the following qualifications will be considered:

* At least 4 years of hands-on, senior-level PHP development experience on highly trafficked websites.

* Solid experience in working across the organization and transforming customer business requirements into comprehensive solutions using the appropriate methods, tools, and technologies.

* Strong communication skills with business and technical team members.

* A willingness to learn Drupal, mainly from a CMS and data management perspective. Prior experience is not required, but highly beneficial.

------

Principal duties, responsibilities and expectations include:

* Brainstorm ideas, do research, remain current with industry trends and best practices, investigate and present options and collaborate with colleagues on continuously developing new and improved solutions for the MSLO brands in the digital domain.

* Perform application development daily using a strong background in web content management systems, object-oriented design, application architecture and creation of and adherence to best practices. PHP and general application development experience will be heavily relied upon.

------

Requirements:

* Bachelor (4-year) degree or equivalent, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science
* In lieu of a technical Bachelor of Arts degree, six or more years experience in a professional and demanding online environment is required.
* Strong knowledge of object-oriented design and principles
* Excellent knowledge of SQL. (MySQL is the primary database platform in use).
* Hands-on experience creating applications that use XML, XSL, and JSON.
* Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript
* A high degree of comfort with Unix-like command lines and operating systems, including basic scripting is preferred.
* Experience with REST-based services and various feed formats is a plus.
* Strong quantitative and analytical skills with an interest in developing creative solutions that leverage disparate technologies with a focus on scalability and high availability.
* Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively participate in the product development and project management processes.
* Experience with Agile methodologies is desirable.
* Enthusiasm, personality, teamwork and a positive attitude count tremendously.
