No need to install an extension.

Just cut and paste this line of code in the JEXEC or die PHP code block at
the top of the
index.php file

// Remove the generator meta tag
$this->setGenerator(null);

And once you are done, the code should look something like this:

<?php
/**
 * @copyright  Copyright (C) 2009 - 2012 Stephen Britton.
 * http://www.joomlajems.com
 * @license    GPL 2 or later
 */

defined('_JEXEC') or die;
$app = JFactory::getApplication();

A WHOLE BUNCH OF CODE IS IN HERE DEPENDING ON THE TEMPLATE

// Remove the generator meta tag
$this->setGenerator(null);

?>
