I don't know if this is the type of function you migh be looking for, 
either, but the PHP cURL stuff is pretty sweet (check 
http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.curl.php).  You might be able to 
leverage this with some clever use of the string functions once you get 
the data to your script.
