It turns out Windows XP was making 
daily snapshots of the system 

after restoring a snap from 3 days ago 
everything seems to have been set straight 
(it looks like it even restored 
some files from the 'recycled bin')

I think the next time I try an experiment, 
I'll create a manual snapshot just before.
