he does this in approx 600 lines of code

and btw -- it is php5, using 'interface', 'implements', 'private', 
'public', _construct' etc... a good learning piece especially if 
network-aware apps interest you.

and it's running on FreeBSD -- i may have to dust off my FreeBSD stuff
