Not really:

In /var/www/html/.htaccess there is
AuthType Basic
AuthName "admin"
AuthUserFile "<path to passwd>"

I would like to unprotect /var/www/html/somedir
/var/www/html/somedir does not have an .htaccess, so there's nothing to
remove.
