Depends on the table. Read http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/EXPLAIN.html 
then do

EXPLAIN SELECT count(*) FROM table;

EXPLAIN SELECT count(field) from table;

at the mysql prompt and let us know what you find.
