I found an article about this on the net, but what confuses me is that
when i retrieve the medium_photo column from the database it is
returning an array, shouldnt plain binary data just be that, not an
array?

Is something happening in between communications or from MSSQL BLOB do
i need to do something to get the straight binary data?
