Reto, I assume you mean the x86_64 version of SuSE?

Since you've been working for a while on this, why don't you test running 
the 32-bit version of SuSE on this system as a fallback?   I ran into 
similar problems on an Intel Xeon EM64T system (x86_64) trying to get PHP 
working with some IBM libraries and that was how I eventually got it to 
work.
