As for the question I beleive phpmyadmin has an operation for this +  
looking it up the call is something like ...

ALTER TABLE t AUTO_INCREMENT = x

The last time I did something similar I attached a temp_id field and  
looped through + set it, dropped the pk(id) field and renamed, this  
was not a large dataset however.
