Hi Chris and Scott,
thanks for the quick replies. You're both right. I should've tested it
with an echo inside of def().
I'd simplified this as a test case from a larger problem I'd seen, and
*assumed* I'd found the right answer. So much for making untested
assumptions, as Chris said ;-)
