I think the Google juggernaut seems to be a compelling factor.

They're investing very heavy in the whole python craze - I figure they
know what's hot or not, they have a zillion PhD's in CompSci roaming
the halls there, and it's kinda of a fun language to play with too.

I pretty much have php under control at this point, ready to dive into
something new and exercise the brain a bit.  ouch!
