aha, so 'SELECT name FROM wines WHERE color = "red";DELETE FROM wines' 
is two statements in mysql (failing with msyql_query) but one in mysqli?!?!

   You have bound
> 'red;DELETE FROM wines' to your parameter, there is no error, the
