Asking for code samples is completely reasonable.  It shows how you think 
and how you code.  This is helpful for two reasons.  First, it's a way to 
back up the statement that one has been coding for 10 years.  Second, 
just because someone has been doing something for 10 years doesn't mean 
they do a good job.
