Bear in mind that every messaging network as its own protocol. Maybe you 
can find a PHP wrapper or interface that uses the GAIM or Pidgin 
libraries (which can talk to most of the main messaging networks).

Another approach would be to find a web-based API that you can use to talk 
to these services.
