No problems here with 20+ sites.

@Stephen. You're right, it can be a little slow.

I remember with WordPress that it was a process that improved with time. The first WP auto updates (version 2.7?) were slooooww. Each subsequent version since then was quicker. 

I'm sure the same will be true of Joomla. I know Nick from Akeeba is already committing quite a lot of improvements.
