Head over to the JED and check out AceSEF and the classic sh404SEF.

If you are using Joomla 2.5 and 3.0, I personally think the native features
work as well as any extension/plugin. You can manage meta information and
create SEF links without the extensions so why bother to add more code to a
system that is already in place.

As for increasing performance, JBetolo works very well - it does things
like combine multiple CSS and JS files and can make your site download
faster (or at least appear like it does :-), But it is super easy to screw
up your site with JBertolo. It is not well documented and you have to
experiment. If you use JBetolo test  it first before moving it to
production.
