Did you install the "Libraries and header files" RPM 
(MySQL-devel-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm)?  How about the "Client programs"
(MySQL-client-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm) and "Server" 
(MySQL-server-4.1.12-1.i386.rpm)?
