I've used PHPMailer with a lot of success, and I've heard the Pear Mail
class is good (though I haven't used it).

If it's something you don't mind outsourcing, CampaignMonitor.com is a great
service. Some folks on the list mentioned it a while ago and I really like
it. (and it's very affordable)
