I don't know about the variable your asking about, but looking over 
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/php/pdf/underground-php-oracle-manual.pdf 
the examples I see there the database name is specified when the 
connection is made, so wouldn't that be where to set the name to display 
to the user?
