Here's how I accomplish that same thing for Trac instead of WordPress.

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
	RewriteEngine On
	RewriteBase /
	RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/trac
	RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
	RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
	RewriteRule . index.php [L]
</IfModule>

This filters out any URIs that start with /trac or point to a file or
directory.
